Dr. Phiroz Darukhanavala (Daru) recently retired as VP and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at BP, a position he held from 2001 to 2015. He has an extensive global background spanning 40 years in the oil and gas industry including exploration, production, refining, retail and marketing; holding several technology and business leadership positions. Daru is credited with introducing many innovative digital solutions addressing some of the most pressing business needs for safe and efficient operations with significant bottom line impact. On a global scale he has led a wide spectrum of strategic and operational activities, leading multicultural teams and managing regulatory environments in America, Europe and Asia. He has been a key player for BP in both the front end and integration sides of the company’s extensive M&A activity.
Daru’s CTO team has created an extensive global business ecosystem to scan the market for new technologies that BP has been able to adopt into its system. This team is BP’s focal point for digital technology leadership and provides a fast and efficient matching of emerging external technology innovation to BP’s business requirements using a VC-type approach to scanning and rapid solution development. Adoption of new game-changing technology solutions have won numerous internal and external (Computerworld, InfoWorld, CIO Magazine, RFID Journal, CNET, Techworld) awards for “Best In Class”, bold innovation at scale.
Previously Daru was Director, Global IT Services for the BP Group, Functional Chief for BP Exploration and CIO for BP Exploration in the Continental US and Alaska.
Daru also served as the Director of the Corporate Supercomputing Center and the Head of the Management Science Group for The Standard Oil Company. He has also worked as a consultant on several projects in the industrial and healthcare arenas, and as an adjunct professor of management at several U.S. universities.
In addition to his strategic contributions to large scale, complex businesses, he has gained a high level strategic perspective as a Board Director for public companies, as well as board roles for high profile industry associations and universities. He was Chairman of the Society for Petroleum Engineers Global Digital Energy Conference.
Daru received his Ph.D. and his M.S. in Operations Research from Case Western Reserve University; and his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay, India. He is the author of numerous publications.
